Oh yes, let’s all listen to the man that said if a game is to be successful it must launch on their competitors platform, Steam.

With every passing day it looks more and more like he’s just an undercover Valve agent doing absolutely everything in his power to push as many people as possible away from Steam’s competitors…

Well, Steam was the reason I had no qualms swapping Windows for Linux. After that I discovered Indie games in the Applications Manager and grew a renewed interest in finding little gems of games, new and old. I can even play games with friends who still use Windows without problems. So for me, Steam enriched gaming. Oh yeah, last week I deleted my Epic Games account with I don’t know how many games I acquired for free over the years, because quality beats quantity. There may have been some good games in there, but I don’t want to drag a scrapyard with me just because somewhere in there may be a nice snack. Also I would have to install an AI-slop app to start it. That’s a nah for me. Goodbye Tim.

My own ease at migrating to Linux as a PC gamer was almost entirely due to the Steam platform but I have had much less success with my GoG collection so I am still holding out for the Linux based platform that they have teased as in-work for a while now.

Epic games’ freebies were something that I would regularly pick up but I honestly haven’t felt any desire to try and access or install any of them since I moved from Win10. Ultimately, I am just hoping that accepting the free games resulted in higher operating costs for Epic and I think I may have purchased one or two heavily discounted games in 5 years. Hopefully I can be forgiven for those past indiscretions.

Steam isn’t perfect but I will support it 100% over that other option since I think Valve has done more to improve the quality and accessibility to high quality games on Linux than anyone else. Sweeney and other pricks like him can keep whining all they want; not gonna even play the tiniest violin for him.

I remember spending a week in 2008ish getting TF2 running on Fedora. It was terrible but it mostly worked.

Now, thanks to Valve and twenty ish years of continuing development and support of Linux gaming, my kids can play practically any game on Linux out of the box.

They’ve earned a mountain of respect from me for that.

You gotta raise the rents Tim. You gotta stop letting Valve live rent free in your head. At this point you’re just giving them free press and good free press at that.

    Also, Fuck you, Tim.

The funniest thing about the recent Epic nonsense is that Steam will most likely choose to not validate this by making any statements, and still gain from this without lifting a finger.

The client is basically irrelevant in this day and age. Anyone could build one better than Steam and it wouldn’t even be hard.

    Lol. So do it Timmy.

Then who said this, Timmy? The LLM you used to do your press releases?

Programming is hard. So, instead of doing that, we vibe coded a new Epic Games Launcher

You know after PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds moved from being an Arma mod to a standalone game using the Unreal engine… Their developers at Unreal worked closely with PUBG to modify the engine during the Battle Royale craze a few years ago. Epic took those engine changes that PUBG was basically funding and this led to creating Fortnite. Now that Epic had a copycat battle royale game, they needed a game store, and created the Epic Games Store to compete with Steam. The goal was to have a distribution channel for other games built on the Unreal engine. The new Epic Games Store cut for developers was 12% instead of 30% from Steam. But there was a hidden cost in that the engine itself required a license fee, somewhere between 5 and 10% of the revenue. So really, he is just mad that after all these years, Steam is still in the lead and the Epic Games Store would charge close to 30% (if it could)…

The engine license isn’t really a hidden cost, everyone in game dev knows about it and it gets waived or reduced for sales on EGS. Also the first million dollars per year is royalty free for each game. And it’s only for Unreal Engine games and was there before the shitty store.

Their engine is actually a REALLY good deal for a lot of studios. Doing everything it offers in Godot would cost a ridiculous amount of extra dev time for a lot of cases

Wasn’t Overwatch and, uh… Dota? their main games that kept them afloat until Fortnite release? Interesting lore about Pung/Fortnite Unreal engine though!

I’m not sure how you’ve managed to get things this twisted up. Overwatch is from blizzard, who are doing fine. Dota 2 is from Valve themselves and is steam exclusive. And as a swede, I can’t complain about calling pubg pung 😄

The client is basically irrelevant in this day and age. Anyone could build one better than Steam and it wouldn’t even be hard. I only bring it up because it’s what everyone talks about when defending Steam. Like it’s still 2024 and these things are hard. Steam’s only remaining value is its network.

No sir. Trust. Steam has earned trust from their customers. THAT is what the 30% cut pays for. Trust that we wont get scammed. Trust that it “just works”. Trust that the service provider keeps our interests in mind when making decisions, not just the shareholders. Trust that Valve is in it for the long haul and our library purchases won’t just poof on us. That doesn’t mean there isn’t risk, but there is trust. I can’t say the same for Epic.
