This codec uses 5-10 times the amount of bandwidth of other streaming codecs, so you’ll want to have your computers connected directly to your router with at least Gigabit ethernet.
At first I read it as 5-10 times less and I was like “Holy shit.” but then I realised it’s the other way around and was like “Holy shit.”.
It’s interesting to see them optimise for latency though.
Oh that could be nice, I’ve got a solid gigabit connection on LAN but I’m still throttled by my GPU encoding rate, might have to give this a go at some point.
That feels like a great use-case! I don’t have a wired connection so the bandwidth usage makes it a no-go for me probably, but you’ll have to post about your experience when/if you give it a shot!
Well I tried it with dead as disco which is my go to for stress testing encoding due to the particle effects and importance of low latency, it was about to pull 4k60 with absolutely no issues, entirely with the CPU if I’m understanding it right? Seemed to be pulling 350 megabit which is so nice.
The colour was a tad muted, not sure if the HDR implementation isn’t quite there or if it’s a config issue. Also it was a bit hit and miss with the surround sound setup, but that might have just been the game.
Overall seriously impressive
Edit: surround sound definitely just steam remote play being weird. Colours are also fine compared to moonlight maybe my eyes are weird today or something
I have my computer hardwired to 2.5Gb and have wifi 7 so I’ll test this out tonight.
Wish they would have worked on adding capability to stream games on Linux before they implement a codec that 90% of people can’t use.
Streaming on linux seems to work fine tho? I’ve used it quite a bit to stream on deck and sometimes from deck to my pc without issues. Also streaming to a phone seems to work well with the steam link app.
Never had issues with remote play together either (both players on linux)
I guess I meant broadcast? The one that lets a friend watch your game or vice versa
Ah yea I forgot that was a thing. I had no idea that it wasn’t available on linux (can confirm it still isn’t).
Discord does support this (depends on the distro) if you’re looking for an immediate solution.
Streaming in Linux has worked for years tho? What in the world are you on about.
