Do native source ports exist? Or should I go with running the game using wine?
AAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!

Anxiety from faint screaming sounds in the distance. It’s burnt into my amygdala like the Spy decloak sound
It fills you with dread, but also anticipation.
I will upvote anything related to Serious Sam
Run it in Proton. You can also just buy it on Steam which makes that easy: https://store.steampowered.com/app/41050/Serious_Sam_Classic_The_First_Encounter/
There’s also an HD version. I replayed it in VR where they give you akimbo weapons of each weapon :D
Run the GOG version through the Heroic launcher
I don’t know if it’s the best, but I play it using Serious Sam Fusion, in Steam.
Echoing this. I’ve been playing exactly The First Encounter on my Steam Deck and it’s just great - the controller support is nice, mixed input is nice for controller+gyro, the performance is great as well, no crashes in my experience. And it’s insanely convenient.
Can recomment it, gameplay was smooth: https://store.steampowered.com/app/564310/Serious_Sam_Fusion_2017_beta/
I see there are some source ports https://www.pcgamingwiki.com/wiki/Serious_Sam:_The_First_Encounter#Source_ports
Thanks! I went with this one https://github.com/tx00100xt/SeriousSamClassic

Mouse was a bit janky at first but it’s alright now after I disabled acceleration, set sharp turning option and I also had to set sensitivity to as low as 4% for some reason.
I see it’s based on port by icculus (he’s fucking legend) but I couldn’t get his version to compile because it’s 10 year old c++ code and c++ compiler devs hate backwards compat
The screenshot looks good. I remember when the demo came out and I played it a bunch, it was really impressive. Not just the graphics but also how much stuff was happening on screen, and it still had great performance.
When I play classic Serious Sam, I use this port with Vulkan rendering. You can just grab the AppImage and drop it alongside the original executable. I believe it also fixes the infamous half fire rate bug. (I’m genuinely not certain; I usually play each level “from scratch” via the level select, so it would never be a problem for me in any case.)
However, the original game is still perfectly playable with a simple config edit for higher resolution and FOV.
I switched to one you recommended with vulkan renderer eventually, because opengl renderer had some graphical artefacts I couldn’t get rid of e.g this texture fighting

For some reason in-game screenshots are broken on vulkan renderer (grey rectangles) so I’m using system screenshotter.
Also the game has pretty harsh mipmapping (or idk how is this called). Is cranking up anisotropic filtering the only way to get rid of it?

Is it somehow possible to use nearest neighbour interpolation for textures?
You can have all sorts of fun in “Advanced Options > Advanced Rendering Options.” The relevant settings for these are listed under “Rendering control.” I don’t believe you can disable mipmaps entirely, but using either Nearest Neighbor or Trilinear (according to preference) with 16x anisotropy (no point in going higher) will get rid of the obvious detail lines.
Note that nearest neighbor also affects things like lights and shadows, which might look pretty strange. The game is built with filtering in mind.
Oh and about wine. I have game window content is much larger than my screen for some reason. I have this problem in other games too. Something with dpi?

Probably something to do with scaling. If you have set your display to >100% scaling, some apps/games will do that.
if you can make application specific scaling rules, you might want to do that for proton/games and set it to 100%, I guess?
yeah I had this set above 96 in winecfg because font size in applications was too small. But it also fucks up games as side effect

are you running games and random apps in same prefix? you might want to make separate ones just for that - or keep app profiles with different dpi in the winecfg
Ok, good to know.
Is pistol-starting each level in serious sam a thing like in doom? Should I do my first playthrough like that? Also Serious or Hard difficulty?
It’s not quite a pistol start; the game gives you a set of default weapons on a per-level basis. I wouldn’t call a fresh start something almost standardized like it is in the Doom community, though. The game is clearly intended for continuous play. However, it is also designed around the default weapons being entirely practical. In the end, it is a preference thing. I like the slight challenge boost.
For a first time ever playthrough, definitely choose Hard. Serious has double damage, which is real harsh if you aren’t familiar with the general landscape and enemy behavior. Serious is well worth an eventual revisit though, since the extra enemies (and double ammo!) wildly change how the game plays out.
My other general advice is never quicksave mid-fight. Often you checkmate yourself long before you die, and it’s really easy to save where, it may not look like it, but you’ve already lost.
