I mean, for most people, we hit the level of “does more than you could ever want” in the DDR2 era. For the average Instagram normie, what do they need from a Windows 11 PC that a Windows 7 machine couldn’t do?

My newest Proxmox node in my homelab is a ThinkPad T540p, 4th Gen i5 😂🫣 DDR3 is not dead yet, and to be fair with the f-ed up pricing, it makes even more sense

Once AI pops companies will shift compute back to their end because a) they have to find some way to use all that hardware, and b) end users are being starved of hardware. Desktop as a service extended to every device you use! Phone, laptop, TV, car, all of it will all have it’s brain in the cloud.

I’m glad I upgraded from 32 GB to 64 GB in like 2022. I was annoyed at the time because the price per-gig had already doubled since I built the computer in late 2020. (And video cards were already more expensive than when I’d browsed in early 2020.)

Here’s the dumbest part, possibly beating any chicanery about neural networks - it’s because I ran two browsers. I was doing web dev with both Firefox and Chromium, and still routinely thrashing. Linux Mint’s cache behavior was the third stooge trying to fit through that doorway shoulder-to-shoulder, and suddenly thirty-two entire gigabytes was not enough memory to browse reddit in the orange window with video streaming in the blue window.

Good to know I can at least upgrade my motherboard and processor without having to buy new memory. I ain’t giving up my 32gb.

Vote with your wallet. Don’t buy the new/refreshed CPUs and absolutely don’t use any AI products. Address the rrot cause not the symptom.

Jokes on you, I just bought parts for a new AM4 system yesterday. :) Though, to be fair, it’s just the CPU and motherboard. Using old memory.

        • 5700x cpu $339aud (on sale from $489), now $310 on sale
        • x570s gigabyte aorus master mobo $411aud (on sale from $522), now rare as hens teeth, on newegg for $700, on ebay for $900+
        • ram 2x16 3200 $152aud, now 3 castles, both legs, and a pristine fully sealed snes.

mobo was a weird buy anyway though, but does make me wonder what the options and prices are like now for am4 systems. Maybe they will start releasing new boards, or rerelease old ones…

Multiple reasons at the time, most of which I don’t remember, one of them was wanting higher speed usb-c which wasn’t available on a lot of other boards, in hindsight it would have been better, and cheaper to get a pci-e to usb-c card. The board also has the error code read out, a thunderbolt add in card connector, WiFi 6E, 4 x m.2s.

There was/is also the potential to replace the cpu with an x3d. Although the 5700x was a very deliberate choice and I am happy with it. I was never planning on moving to am5.
