Your GPU is both abandoned by proprietary drivers and doesn’t have a GSP so it can’t be properly supported by the kernel drivers either (at least not until someone somehow figures out how to reclock them, which hasn’t happened in the last ten years). In other words, your cries are appropriate.
It’s still supported by the 580 driver for a few years. But yes, after that it will be in a rough spot.
Yes but that line will never receive feature updates again, only kernel compatibility and security fixes. That also means there is no chance for any VRAM usage improvements on a driver level anymore.
Fair enough, but I wouldn’t call it abandoned just yet. Long-term support on Linux is clearly a big advantage of AMD/Intel open source drivers :)

Small processor on the GPU for offloading some tasks that would otherwise be handled by the drivers
My 1070 ti is still going strong. One my best purchases.
I am however considering an upgrade to a 1080 ti.
I would avoid that unless you get one basically for free. As others mentioned, official driver support is pretty much end of life and there possibly won’t ever be proper unofficial support either for that generation.
