Just another stark reminder that no matter how good a corporation is, they’re still a corporation that cannot be trusted to do the right thing.

Wtf its barely been any time. These next few years are when people start needing the replacement parts.

I suppose, although you can’t expect everything to be maintained in perpetuity. That’s why the repair guides are out there and the battery/SSD specs are available to the public for aftermarket replacements.

If this was Apple, I think we’d all be singing a different tune, since they sue anyone who tries to create a aftermarket repair ecosystem.

(For the record: not supporting the decision, but rather explaining from an engineer’s lens why they probably are doing this and how it’s not as much as a pain point vs. repair hostile products)

Sucks but luckily aftermarket batteries exists, so it’s not the end of the world.

Precisely. While I do think it is frustrating that original replacement components are being phased out right around the time these components might start failing…

As long as Valve aren’t artificially blocking 3rd parties from making compatible parts, then I don’t see it as anti-consumer as much as it is a technically poor way to supporting the long-term legacy of their own product.

It does put a small concern in the back of my mind for the Steam Frame, which I desperately want to know more about.

Like, didn’t they release a lot of info about said parts? And aren’t others also making them?

Here is Valve’s answer to The Verge, as of 5PM ET: “We just confirmed with iFixit that they plan to have batteries back in stock by next week.”

“iFixit will be getting the same OEM parts sourced through Valve’s partners that they always have,” spokesperson Kaci Aitchison Boyle tells me.

There’s no need for spin when the whole thing was just a miscommunication that got overblown.
