It looks like the PS6 could cost more than 1k Dollars, if it would launch next year. And maybe even more expensive if the prices go even up. So I had an idea for Sony:
An Upgrade hardware extension that turns the PS5 into a PS6 equivalent. Think like a 32X or something like that from the 90s. All it does is, add some RAM, has a CPU and GPU and that’s it. All other parts are basically PS5. This PS5-to-PS6-Upgrade-Kit could cost maybe 400 Dollars? Every owner of a PS5 would be eligible to play PS6 games, without spending another 1k Dollars. No need to reinvent the controller too.
We don’t know how much different a PS6 is planned to be, and if this approach is even technically possible. I think back to the 90s where Nintendo and Sega had multiple hardware extensions to upgrade the consoles. Back then it didn’t always go well, but in today’s day and age this approach could be very welcome. What do you think?
Hmm maybe instead we go back to releasing games with no better than ps3 era graphics for, oh 3 years, then when we go back to contemporary everyone will be like wow! what a leap! New games with such crispness!
A hardware upgrade for hardware that wasn’t designed to be upgradable?
yeah, my bad. I didn’t think this through.
Yup, it’s called a PC, and for a brief time it also could run PS games.
You mean its called a PS and for a brief time it could run PC games? Because if you install Linux on it, it can run Steam games. Otherwise I’m not sure how to understand your comment.
I think they’re referring to the few years when PlayStation Studios was releasing games on PC as well.
It’s funny because PCs have been able to run PS1/PS2/PS3 games for a while now. My Macs can even run PS3 games via emulation.
Legally speaking, PCs have never been able to run games released on PlayStation. That was never a thing. However, many games published on PlayStation have been published on PC.

Not exactly true (if we forget direct ports for a moment). There are lot of Playstation games sold as emulation, such as Metal Gear Solid in example.
It would be a great idea if the PS5 was designed to be upgradeable, but given how everything is already tightly packed, it unfortunately wouldn’t be possible.
Oh I didn’t thought of this. Yeah I guess there is no hardware connection that could be used for this kind of extension. USB is for sure not the right connection for CPU and GPU. Would be cool though, if they had this planned from the beginning, like in early 90s. Especially even more so with these PC architecture under the hood. Well there goes my idea into the bin. Thanks for bringing back from orbit down to earth. :D
I don’t think this would be feasible because of how the ps5 is designed with a specific board, that isn’t really upgradeable. Even if it could be done then i think the cost would be pretty high to get it done, to the point where you may as well get a ps6. I think the best solution is for people to just stay on ps5 if they think it’s too expensive. In fact that’s what i was already planning on doing anyway even before the price increases. If the ps4 lifecycle is anything to go by ps5 will still get releases years into the ps6 cycle, plus on top of that, i feel like ps5 > ps6 will be less of an upgrade compared to ps4 > ps5. Even if it’s usually not full resolution, the upscaled base ps5 image looks good enough on my 4k screen. Worst case scenario maybe games will stop offering 60fps modes to compensate. That might be the only reason for me to consider upgrading, but even then, if it costs a fortune i’d probably still just ride it out.
The RAM, GPU and CPU will account for most of that 1K though
It’s not a dedicated GPU, its part of the CPU. So its not comparable to GPU prices that includes VRAM. And the RAM for the upgrade kit would only have 8GB instead 24GB. And there would be no SSD. In addition to all the other stuff that is not needed on an upgrade kit (including the controller, PSU and more).
After the others replies I understand this is not possible, because the PS5 doesn’t have upgrade connections builtin. But I think this could save a lot of money for everyone owning a PS5 (if it were possible). I mean saving on 16GB RAM and on 512GB or 1TB SSD alone is a huge deal.
I think they should prioritize Fleshlight vr.
