I myself see it as a way to support European companies more than as a way to punish foreign ones. I think the effort to push non-proprietary software can align with the push to become less dependent on US companies (especially Big Tech), just like the push to use less single-use plastics can align with the push to use public transport more frequently. For that reason, i really like the terms buying with purpose and voting with your wallet more than the term but from EU. But at the same time, i don’t let the term decide what i do or not do, and my guess is that holds true for most people interested in this movement.

Totally fair to point out what you don’t like, share your concerns and ‘warn’ others. Definitely do not mean to discard this topic entirely.

My piece of cake would be to no be bothered by imperfect allies working towards a shared goal. If you don’t like them, leave them be and do your own thing.

I can totally imagine, i’m currently on unlimited because that seemed a bargain compared to mail plus yet i barely use any of the other services. No judgement from me to anyone not staying at Proton though, the whole reason to look to European alternatives is because of Big Tech and US policies, so a CEO positioning himself too close to those is a big no no. But for now i continue to give them the benefit of the doubt, i’ll have to see what the future brings though.

Just going to put this here because idgaf about downvotes; i didn’t decide to leave proton despite those questionable statements. I’m reading all the alternatives in the comments and might check some i haven’t heard about out, but i am very likely to stay with Proton at least in the near future. For me they offer a good product. What i did do to make switching easier is not use their own mail forwarding or simplelogin but i use addy.io instead, can totally recommend it.
