Our theory was that if that team is capable of getting across the finish line, even if it doesn’t sell well, they’ll now know what it feels like to finish. And they will get feedback from the sales and the public as to what they did and didn’t do right and so that team will be more strong, the individuals will be stronger, and we’ll be able to circle back and do a more competent game next time.

Good point, but also back then games weren’t that expensive and long time to make than ever before. The AAA industry first needs to get the development cost under control, and I don’t mean by using Ai to make cheap games faster and cheaper than before.

Games don’t need to be that expensive to make. That’s a result of suits pushing everything to be an “epic” blockbuster with absurd graphics over anything else.

I mean my GOTY is Queen’s Domain, and it was made by two people on a shoestring budget, and looks like PS1 graphics.

Agreed. Also games from China also shows that a AAA like experience and look that is interesting and fun to play, can be achieved with lower budgets. Nintendo in example at least does it right, were games are good, look good, aren’t huge in file size and they found a good pace of development and releases. I don’t like Nintendo on a personal level anymore, but man, they are good at making games (regardless of the anyone’s personal taste).

BTW Queen’s Domain looks interesting, I saw it in Steam already. It’s probably time to put it on wishlist. While games like these might be good, it’s just not making lot of money and does not appeal to a wide range of people. From the perspective of these mega corporations, it’s just peanuts and not worth the time to them. Also don’t forget, that for each successful and good indie game, there are probably 500 that fail.
