I am building a game using the Super Tux assets. It is NOT an asset flip, game has a totally different main concept, new mechanics, 4 new boss fights, built with a different engine.
When I first started building the game, it was supposed to be a FOSS game. But after spending a ton of sleepless nights working on it, I would like to get compensated.
Donations will probably not cut it, judging by what most FOSS games go through. I’m a huge fan of FOSS, so it does feel wrong releasing a commercial games where 80% of the assets are from volunteer work.
On the other hand, the license approves of this. If they have an issue with it, they would have chosen another license, correct?
What do you think?

While I am also a FOSS evangelist, I don’t get people who insist on open-source games. It feels similar to asking movie makers to publish their Kdenlive or Blender project files.
just to give another reason: proving the software is safe.
Basically the entire reason why F-Droid apps are all safe is because the code is easily checkable.
But i still understand why someone wants to go proprietary. Just wanted to add that reason
Games are still software and being in control of your computing is still important. The media content when within a game has a functional purpose in the software.
The modern games industry sucks, and being proprietary software contributes to reasons why. No one can resist the temptation to use power they have over their user’s computing to enrich themselves at the user’s expense, and many appear to even want to exploit the users. More games that are open source/software freedom respecting could make the games industry less sucky.
