Tyr is a fun free to play tank game like world of tanks but without all of the nonsense and with a scifi theme where tanks have unique abilities.
It is early development but genuinely a decent time, works good on a steam deck and also has controller support.
I recommend it, especially because it is free without all the normal free to play nonsense, who knows what will happen in the future but the developers seem decent.

I played the playtest for all of 20 minutes (PvP is seriously not my thing) but I could see where people could get sucked into it and enjoy it.
I wish I was more into PvP/multiplayer in general.
I’ve encountered the steam page in the queue and to me it looked like a spiritual successor to
tankie online (I think that was the title)(E: it was ‘Tanki Online’) which I liked to play many years back. I hope they captured the fun but without the shitty elements. There’s an “alert”/line-of-sight mechanic where you don’t actually know where anyone is unless they fire at someone (general vicinity) or you actually see them on your screen/they hit you (exact location).
ETA: there’s also an armor system, where different tanks have different levels of plating; and depending on the angle of the hit, it’ll do more or less damage, or it might bounce off entirely.
There are light, medium, and heavy tanks, each of which have their own abilities, pros/cons, and of course armor levels. There’s at least one or two sniper tanks; each different tank has a special ability too, like scanning an area to see where enemies are (it only shows a static location so it’s more like a “last known” type of thing, people can move and reposition), extra armor for a few seconds, a dash boost, etc. One of the tanks literally transforms into a jet as its ability and you can fly around and shoot from the air for a limited time.
I just hate games that punish toxicity. If I wanted to play a silent game then I’d play single player.
Um, okay? Did you mean to reply to my comment with that?
Yes, it’s about preferring single player.
I think if you found a toxic multiplayer game that it would pull you in.
That sounds kind of backwards, but okay. I think it really depends on if you happen to find someone you play well with and like, or if you already have a group of friends to play with.
