I’m on a 1080Ti and while still working fine, I start to feel the lack of performance in some games. Wardogs being the most recent example. Even if that is an issue with the devs (not optimized etc.) it still affects me. So the game looks like shit, worse than games 10, even 20 years ago. Crazy.
I was using a 1070 just a few years ago. I also felt the performance lack, but it wasn’t just the card. The entire PC was old, with old CPU and DDR-3. I wonder how the 1070 would hold up on my current DDR-5 based computer. I would have swapped out for testing purposes, but I don’t want to install and setup Nvidia driver. I’m on Linux and the modern Open Source drivers only support starting with RTX 20xx series.
Those Pascal series was the best graphics card I ever had.
CPUs have still a good price on the market, I don’t know about Motherboards. So you could eventually buy a new board that supports modern CPUs, but still support DDR4. Then just reuse the RAM. Everything else could be reused. That’s the only way forward I guess, if you don’t want spent too much money, but still want a modern CPU.
DDR4 boards have increased in price more than DDR5 boards (generally speaking) because of how expensive DDR5 is. Basically, consumers are buying DDR4 and not DDR5, causing a lot of the new old stock of DDR4 boards to rise in price.
I’m aware, that’s why I said it was still cheaper than DDR5. I was responding to this:

This is my current issue
I have a 2080Super, which should be good for another couple years, but my CPU is an old i5-9600k and only 16 gigs of DDR4.
I can still run games but the last few years I’ve struggled to get a steady 60 frames.

It’s still less than DDR5 memory, obviously.
The point is not to buy more RAM, but reuse the existing one and buy a new CPU.

Emphasis mine, obviously.
