I would probably go with that one instead pirating. Not that I’m not pirating any games, far from (especially when it comes to emulation, or a hacked 3DS). On PC I have some trust issues, because I don’t know how to make sure the games don’t contain viruses and so on.
I think the virus worry is overblown anyway, but as long as you stick to some trusted repackers etc you’ll be fine. FitGirl is more trustworthy than some official publishers these days, tbh.
But still, I do also enjoy owning games. It’s nice to have library, and track achievements and playtime and that stuff. And on that note: you definitely shouldn’t buy Bloodlines on Steam. I don’t think that version even runs. And regardless, you absolutely need the Unofficial Patch to even finish the game, and that comes bundled with the GOG version. And there is also a one-click install for the Plus version of the patch, which has more cut content (although I’d recommend that for a second playthrough).
I personally don’t think virus and similar issues is an overblown issue. The problem is, I don’t know how to make sure it is okay, other than taking your word as a random stranger in the internet (don’t take it personally, you know how I mean it). I even was on the FitGirl webpage and thought about it. But everyone their own. I can’t buy on Steam anyway, so it’s not even my decision. Didn’t know it was such a hassle. If the game does not run, why don’t hey take it down from Steam? A Remaster makes perfect sense here.
BTW I also have the original Ghostbusters The Videogame on Steam, but can’t finish it because it stopped working. They took it down from Steam (I can still download and play) and released a new Remaster instead fixing the game for their owners. I wait until the game is very cheap and buy it again. I hope this won’t be a similar issue with Bloodlines, I hope every owner gets the game for free or at the very least a discount.

I have no idea, and honestly it’s one of the things I dislike Steam for (whereas I’m otherwise mostly positive about it). It’s not an isolated phenomenon either: a ton of old games that you can still buy on Steam literally won’t even launch. That’s why you should always buy retro on GOG.
Hm, an alternative would be GOG it seems, just had the idea to check there: https://www.gog.com/en/game/vampire_the_masquerade_bloodlines GOG made the game 2026 ready, as part of their GOG Preservation Program; effectively a Remaster.

It wasn’t retro when I bought it though
I’ll allow it.
At least with the GOG preservation program there’s an incentive to keep the game working over time, and another reason to donate to it when buying.

Well, I don’t think it’s fault of Steam that a game does not launch. The publisher needs to take it down.
