With the rise of local LLMs (and China) this makes perfect sense for openAI and other partners of nvidia. I wonder if openAI or any other partner is involved in these decisions.

Damn Nvidia I was already gonna buy an AMD graphics card next, you don’t have to sell it to me!

Really trying their best to ruin any lingering reputation they might have had in the gaming community!

Nvidia has been shitty for years, yet the vast majority of gamers still refuse to buy AMD or Intel instead.

I completely agree that Nvidia is one of the least consumer-friendly companies, but for a long time they have simply offered the better features like DLSS and RT efficiency. And depending on the tier of card you’re buying, that is also the case in terms of raw performance, even now.

AMD and Intel also has their share of shitty practices, so it’s not like you either buy from “the good guys” or “the bad guys”. They’re all corporations that would, and do, happily screw you over if it means more money.

I agree though. While there are some valid reasons for buying an Nvidia GPU, a lot of people keep buying them simply because they’re used to it or that they’re already popular. If something like the 9070 XT, or any weaker cards, would meet your needs then you should seriously consider looking elsewhere than Nvidia.

There are specialized chips in development that have ve already proved to be faster, cheaper, and less power hungry. The second they become generally available, any new data center not using them would be foolish.

That being said, we are talking about gamers who will just continue to buy Nvidia in the future despite how awful they treat us.

          Why would Nvidia release them?

They can continue to make current-gen chips and charge outrageous premiums. Why would they ever go to the trouble and expense of tooling for a new die when people are buying what they have now for (nearly) any price?

They cost between $8000 and $11,500 where I live (Australian dollars).

Who is even buying them anyway.

Thats the point, they killed off a large part of their existing market to chase a speculative one.

So they’re just betting that the bubble lasts more than the next quarter.

        It’s not speculative!

They have the orders in hand. If they provide the card, they get the money.

The people doing the speculating are the ones building the data centres, hoping the demand will be there long enough to pay off the costs.

Nvidia is not paid 100% in cash though. If the bubble pops, they might not get paid even if they deliver the card.

Since much of their payment is in equity and cross-investment deals, it isn’t quite that simple. If there’s a market crash, the value of Nvidia’s “payment” will plummet after-the-fact. So it’s speculative in a large part.

I don’t say this just to be pedantic, I think it’s important to understand how invested (literally and figuratively) Nvidia is in maintaining the AI bubble.

Sorry I might have worded that weirdly, but I agree.

I meant the AI market is speculative, and at the cost of an existing market of customers goodwill (who are only quite profitable), nvidia bought some speculative tech bros goodwill (who are currently incredibly profitable).

Its certainly one of the business decisions of all time.
