I want minimum latency as I play competitive games and am very sensitive to it. Hyprland has hdr support which is a must for me and on paper should support vrr and tearing aswell. With VRR I had occasional issues but something like tearing was impossible to get working for some reason, kde plasma should do both well but I have gotten used to tiling window managers and don’t really want to give that up.

So id like to know about your setup if you have gotten something like tearing to work or other recommendations.

EDIT: I went back to KDE Plasma and was able to confirm that direct scanout and tearing work, i used window rues to force it for specific games, i also use https://codeberg.org/anametologin/Krohnkite which allows tiling on plasma. Its not as beautiful as hyprland but meets me demands

I haven’t fucked around with tearing and ultra-low latency, but I have bounced around a few wayland gaming builds and I’ve gotta say Gnome has been the most consistently stable DE of the bunch.

Others may be prettier, more easily customized, or have single-digit frame rate gains in the right settings, but they all suffered from more crashes, stuttering, or other bugs across the board.

3% higher frame rate is meaningless if the game freezes for 0.25s when it counts.

I can’t promise it’ll solve your problems, but I can recommend PikaOS+Gnome if youre looking for a rock solid gaming distro. Otherwise youre looking at starting down the Arch path and spending months to tweak it to perfection only to have an update roll back those tweaks.
