Wish Microsoft let id go independent instead of firing so much of their employees, sigh. I fear for the future of the idtech engine, so sick of the dominance of Unreal engine.
Just speculation on my part, but it could be a different situation for id just in terms of how the studios were acquired.
Double Fine was a direct sale to Microsoft, while id came in under Zenimax. The acquisition deal with Zenimax is that they were allowed to continue operating semi-autonomously, and maybe they are the ones who opted not to spin off the studio.
