I bought this laptop recently and it has all AMD GPU I thought it will have a good Linux support even my last laptop has Nvidia GPU and it only drop 10% of performance on average compared to Windows also run Linux better than this, it behaving weirdly like in cyberpunk 2077 it caped at 60fps during gameplay but not the menu and lower the settings only drop power draw but not increasing the fps, in Elden Ring it caped at 80w, I tried lact or corectrl to change GPU profiles but it didn’t do anything I tried commands I found on fourms I tried reinstalling my entire os nothing work, I’m trying to fix it for a week now I don’t know what to do anymore.
Did you try Bazzite ? I believe it ships with a tool to handle this system-wide. I think Steam OS can do that too.
what’s the laptop? brand? model? also what distros are you using?
Asus Rog Strix G15 AMD version (Rx6800m) vanilla Arch and several other
I tried all of mainstream distros and it all doing the same thing
Did you tried changing proton version ? Or changing from the steam(or heroic game launcher) package from the distro to the flatpak version (or vice versa) ?
I found that llms can be useful in troubleshooting.
Maybe start with comparing hardware sensor stats GPU/CPU temp/frequency/fan etc.
I think is useful to use a bleeding edge OS since what you are talking about, is a combination of kernel/drivers, user space tools and software.
Start with something low level maybe clpeak or as part of Phoronix Test Suite. A game is a complex software that touches many parts of a system, especially for laptops where some resources are shared.
That’s what I did, I reluctantly ask Gemini in one last ditch efforts it give me solutions that I already tried but then it mentioned SteamDeck=0 which is a command I never know existed, I almost cry thinking that I have to switch back Windows again if the issue still persisted, I mean I scour the depths of abyss of Linux fourms tried probably 10 differents distros and install years of Linux kernel versions and today is my last day trying to fix it if I can’t I probably going back to Windows which thankfully I don’t have to.
Games and game/steam environment variables is very high software chain. Based on what your are reporting.
Ie Phoronix: Windows 11 vs. Ubuntu Linux Performance On The AMD Ryzen AI Max PRO 390 “Strix Halo”
On a geometric mean basis, Ubuntu 25.04 was around 13% faster than the OEM install of Microsoft Windows 11 Pro that shipped on the HP ZBook Ultra G1a laptop.
Or
You need to look at something low level. There is something unique wrong with laptop + kernel combination. Most search for why a game performance badly will not help you.
There has been many reported issues of unique issues for laptops that have taken a lot of work to fix like Linux 7.1-rc4 Seeing The Latest Laptop Quirks
If you are going to use Ilm I recommend using Claude Opus or equivalent. And Run in Claude Code and start with something like “I am running the following hardware:… I am seeing performance regression when running under Linux vs windows. Start with making me scripts to test and document low level performance for both windows and Linux”
