Many console games require a paid subscription for online multiplayer and key features, even when the game is purchased. This can lead to people feeling financial strain to stay connected to distant friends or family. We feel this is for no reason other than greed.
We had that before, on the PS3 anyway. Games just required an “online pass” to use the online features. Usually you got a code to redeem one with a new copy of the game, but if you bought second hand, you had to pay for it.
I’m not sure if that was any better than paying for one subscription to access online features for all games. I understand that there are costs in running the servers and such, though I agree that the subscriptions are definitely over priced

Those “online pass” days were grim. Xbox Live gold sub and I need an online pass to play BF3!
Yeah, it was complete BS. I’m glad it’s not a thing anymore
