Gamma has always been a tinkerer.
Long before GammaOS and before retro Android handhelds became a category of their own, he was pulling apart firmware, breaking ROMs with hex editors, and figuring out how to get Android running on devices it was never meant to touch. As a university student
I’ve been following this community on reddit for idk how long already yet I never bought one yet. Guess I’m too responsible (this is a lie, I have other hobbies I dumped money on)
But of I were getting an android retro handheld, it would probably something that has gamma OS as alternative.
Most likely I’m going to get a telescopic controller or that gamesir pocket taco. Since I’m playing GBA mostly. You got any suggestion? Seems like gamesir is often recommended, the g8 and the x5 lite
I had the GameSir X2 back in the day. I really liked the aesthetic, but passthrough charging didn’t work with the PinePhone, and it also didn’t work at all with my Google Nexus (an old phone). Later, I switched to the Backbone One, and it worked perfectly with all the devices I had. So good drivers are important. But that was quite some time ago - I’m pretty sure many things have improved on the GameSir side. Later I sold both and switched to a dedicated device.
Noted on the backbone. Seems good, albeit expensive. Maybe I can get it on discount or with coupons.
But I’m probably going to go with a Bluetooth telescopic one. I can clamp my phone vertically with spacers to make it like that magicx one 40 in the article lol.

At the moment I’m finally emulating on my phone
I used GammaOS on RG405m. It’s a great OS.
Yeah, emulating on the phone is also a good option. Buying a telescopic controller is cheaper than a dedicated handheld.
But there is something magical about having a dedicated device 🙂

I’d watch a recent video from Russ about phone controllers: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iYElqO7EdXo He mentions the Taco one, it indeed looks cute 🙂
