MS was anything but lol, they had a swarm of lawsuit dramas over by then. Only Apple glazed MS because they quite literally saved them from bankruptcy which they only did as insurance against a proper antitrust case.
Google was newer but they also weren’t a private company, they were riding silicon valley money to the moon.
Regardless, Steam is a monopoly but their immediate competitors are the only ones chucking anti competitve measures around like crappy DRM and price lockins.

750ti actually fell under Maxwell, and RPMFusion just split it off into akmod-nvidia-580xx for GTX 750/800/900/10 cards.
I think I faintly remember running a 600 card on linux back in the day, so no reason it shouldn’t work.
750 specifically was special because it was Maxwell architecture that Nvidia used on an “old” GPU brand line.
Hence the CM 5.0 instead of 3.0.
Mine was on the 580 something driver with CUDA 13.2 when I removed it from my server a couple of weeks ago.
Not to act smug but this is one area where I see akmod seem to work better than dkms which is weird considering they should both produce the same result.
This is funny because I recently retired my 750ti which I had been using for server work and it ran great with the latest Nvidia driver (although I heard they’re gonna drop support soon and move the driver into a legacy package on rpmfusion).
The poor thing couldn’t even do H.265, had 2 Gb of VRAM, and needed specially compiled libraries for pytorch/tensorflow stuff because CM 5.0 was over 10 years ago, but it chugged along just fine.
I’m personally still on a 1660ti because despite OpenCL’s best efforts, CUDA has everyone by the balls, but now that I have a beefier server setup, I’ll probably go with AMD on my next build.
Assuming I’ll actually want to make a new build with these insane prices lol.

Not that it makes them any better, but I’m pretty sure GPT-3 was the nexus point in the current mess we have now, which means they hopped off right after it was internally finished and made their own company.
2018 was a full 2 years before that point, and back then AI was still primarily stuff like OpenCV, Pytorch projects, etc. that were things you could legitimately run on one or two workstation GPUs or even a cheap tensor core addon if you didn’t want to run on CPU.
No that’s was the second lawsuit, Sony v Bleem!, which was a different emulator.

Dunno if Yuzu provided the game itself, or tools to extract the game successfully, but the main argument from Nintendo was still copy protection bypassing, which is illegal.
Actually now that I think about it, I’m pretty sure they also nuked the Switch dumping tools from GitHub long before they killed Yuzu for the same reason. All it did was extract the firmware and console keys, but it was enough to force the tools to be rehosted.
The emulator didn’t, but I think they had one somewhere in their git history or website.
I forgot now, but I vaguely remember Nintendo pointing out a specific key that was found under the parent company’s assets.

Emulation doesn’t just apply to games. The entire legality is based off of the fact that reverse engineering is also legal, which is how companies can replicate ideas or concepts from competitor products, or how 3rd party vendors make products compatible with other platforms.
It would be stupid to have to wait for a patent to expire before you can utilize the concept in your own product. Patent cockfighting would be a completly new level of hell, and no one would get anywhere.
Imagine having to wait 10 years before you can use 3rd party controllers for your switch because Nintendo uses a proprietary bluetooth driver. 3rd party Wiimotes wouldn’t even exist.
The only ethical conundrum is the aide in piracy, but we’ve already seen how little that has to do with emulation due to homebrew and flashcarts.
If anything, Nintendo has a higher moral ground on ROM libraries which they can argue aides in piracy due to “bypassing” copyright protection.
Nintendo succeeded in killing Yuzu because they had decryption keys which Nintendo could argue is breaking their copy protection, which is why they settled for 2.4 million dollars in sales damages because they knew they wouldn’t be able to win in court.
All of these forks have since removed the key and require the user to supply it (legally from your own console).
So in theory they should be protected under US law since emulation and reverse engineering is completely legal.
However
Nintendo also has infinite money to throw at the problem, and FOSS devs are usually not willing to deal with insane amount of personal liability because of a hobby, which is how they killed Ryujinx.
So you better hold onto your guts if you plan to fight Nintendo.

Otherwise, do a heavy ram test with memtest86+ (booted) to check your XMP profile and RAM sticks are good based on your previous post.
The RAM fallout catching up to every company is probably what’s holding them back on everything.
Proton-GE is essentially bleeding edge with all of its dependencies and upstream set to latest, so it gets updated constantly as a rolling release.
Valve waits until the next version has been well tested before bumping it in proton experimental, and then eventually the default release.
I know Proton-GE usually takes a week or two.

I got my 32gb DDR4 3600 for $60 2 years ago and four 2Tb NVME SSDs for $115 a pop last year.
The ram is now $335 and the NVMEs aren’t even in production anymore after they ran out of stock during the end of 2025 buyout. The closest equivalent is going from $400-$500 each these dsys.
