He didn’t became persona non grata, because he wanted to fix things. He’s persona non grata because he keept pushing breaking changes in the stable main branch. And when others on the team asked him to stop. He pushed back entitled and refused. So they gave him the boot.

I wish him the best of luck with his fork. He’s going to need it as it will largely be all him. As he’s not a responsible or team player. I’d say the xorg group could do better too. But they weren’t unjustified expelling him.

I would guess you’re referencing Turtle WoW? But I have no sympathy for them. They did that to themselves. Blizzard left most private servers to themselves for over a decade. My first experience with Wow was a private server.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m a fan of the content generally, not the company. Especially being part of pedosoft now. I mean, honestly that was kind of a lateral move considering Kotik. Or any of the other issues. But turtle in particular was egregious. They weren’t taking small donations in the kitty to help pay for hosting for a server for their friends.They were operating a cash shop and paying for developer’s and much more. Writing new lore and stories built off the back of blizzard’s content.

At some point you have to be like; shit, just create some new assets etc and tell your own story. Something that should be simpler than trying to keep reverse engineering someone else’s content. No one has a monopoly on dwarves, elves, humans, gnomes, litch, orc, trolls etc. They were running a business on blizzard’s own name while competing with them.

Interesting. Honestly I’d love to see blizzard endorse something like this and maybe even work with. Though that’s probably far fetched. Ultimately it’s the content that makes them money. This would allow for the possibly of Linux BSD haiku and other native clients as well as possibly arm and riscv native binaries as well. It could “possibly” reduce some Dev load. While also future proofing things.

Seconded, it’s absolutely the CPU. This is a CPU that’s nearly as old as the original Intel core lineup. DDR 3 and pcie 2. And worse performing generally. Spending $100 on someone’s second-hand mid-2010 system. Paired with that graphics card should be wildly adequate. My main system runs a sixth generation i7 with an RX 580 overclocked. It isn’t playing Doom the Dark Ages or most recent games maxed out, but it’s no slouch.

I have a system of a marginally older vintage. A core 2 quad with 4 threads and a gtx 560. Also DDR 3 and pcie 2. It would be physically impossible for a system of those specs to even make use of most of an AMD 6700. The system bus alone would be bogged down, trying to even feed the GPU a fraction of what it can take. Not even counting other processing overhead.

PBR rendering is demanding on data rate. Way more than gourad shading or basic MIP mapped textures. Double the data or more.

Most streaming services are already accessible from the steam deck/steam os. Granted it might take popping into desktop mode. But I haven’t found a streaming service yet that hasn’t worked under arch. At least after installing widevine.

It certainly COULD be made easier. Not even having to leave the main steam os screen. And you can already run android apps under steam os. Again it is arch. I still wouldn’t mind valve giving waydroid a little love like they did with wine. On older built in Intel graphics it’s jank city with waydroid. But it is older non xe Intel graphics. Jank is it’s cornerstone.

While I generally agree with your overall assessment. The thing you have to understand is that Microsoft has largely written off home users. At least written them off as a concern. They are much more focused now on corporate, government, and AI. Whether or not home users remain trapped on their products, matters less to them. Compared to the other groups.

The recent revelations about meddling by Microsoft corporate into their gaming division, closing so many successful studios. Canceling massive projects. Without regard to how much time, energy and resources were poured into them. All to meet some arbitrary 30% margin of profitability. They’re betting in the short term on the other groups to keep home users trapped and helpless. And short term it will work to an extent.

But the time is right for valve to push right now regardless.

I have an R3. Overall, it’s a decent little system and for $100 if you’re getting the graphics card with it probably reasonably worth it. The thing to keep in mind with this is it’s very limited on its upgrade path due to all the proprietaryness. That’s also going to impact reparability.

My R3 came with a 6th generation I7. Buying business e-waste systems with sixth generation i7 processors is typically going to run you about a hundred dollars themselves. But not include a discrete GPU or power supply capable of handling a discrete GPU. As long as you know what you’re getting into going into it, it’s okay.

Oh nice. There may be other interface choices out there. But choice is always good. And as a KDE user I’m definitely going to keep an eye on this.

If gaming is your main goal. Bazzite or similar should likely be your first target. If you want a more desktop experience. I’d probably recommended vanilla mint. LMDE and Debian are great. But LMDE is a side project, that gets a bit less support and updates. And Debian is about stability over cutting edge anything.

Honestly just tinkering. Getting much modern software on it is a bit of an exercise in futility. But playing around with basic programming in a terminal can still be fascinating and a lot of fun. The concepts of the os have always interested me a lot. It as well as inferno.

Cool. I wonder how many people actually run Hurd and what the user experience and it’s cases are like. I’ve known about it for ever. But to this day I can’t say I’ve ever talked with anyone who runs it. No shade against Hurd of course. I like BeOS haiku and plan 9, so I’m certainly not trying to make a dig about user base.
