Hey everyone, posting another video I made here more or less venting about the unfortunate state of the industry and how ridiculous it can be when companies like Microsoft fumble the bag repeatedly.
Thanks to anyone who watches!
Its not hard to quantify what makes a studio successful. You nearly said it, and a thief video here I watched a few days ago puts the whole picture into view. Its the passion, focus, and determination of the people who want to make something great. When you remove these people and force those that remain to do a shareholder gauntlet good games dont get made. Because good games are works of passion that come from the heart and mind. They strip the chaff and leave you with just the intended experience. Triple As dont do that anymore because the intended experience is shareholder profit not a gameplay loop. Those That Be will continue to fall to Those That Will Be and the lesson will never be learned under the blind gaze of capitalism.
Yup. You and I know that well, as does the person who made that video you referenced.
But it’s hard to quantify that to c suite execs and shareholders.
I honestly cannot stand when any company I like goes public or gets bought by a public entity like Microsoft. It always feels like the writing is already on the wall.
At the very very end of it all, they really only care about IP, and that’s really stupid and short sighted.
Its because soul has no quality or quantity. It just is. You cannot quantify what made Michael Kirkbride who he was, but you remove him and Morrowind is not nearly as good. You’re right, all they see if the IP itself and not what it took to make. Its almost poetic. They’re searching so hard to maximize profit that they throw away the one thing that makes it and essentially what its all about; people. Its that simple.
It’s that simple, and damn is that sad.
I know there’s still plenty of good games on the way. It’s wild that I’m excited for two star wars games in one year, Zero Company and Galactic racer lol.
It’s just a damn shame so many legacy studios and IP have fallen from grace in the past half decade. I do love the strong indie scene though, that’s been awesome. It’s a mixed bag right now, and that’s if you already have hardware lol.
