In a few days, the final two components will arrive to finally get a fully capable desktop PC again after roughly six months limited to a tiny chromebook wiped and replaced with Linux.
It took a while to have the spare cash to get a new/used system off of ebay with the intention of transferring the bulk of my higher end parts from my old desktop to that one, only to realize that the new desktop used a Lenovo 10 pin Power supply, so I’d have to order an adapter to be able to install my 750 watt PSU in order to install my 3060 Graphics Card.
That should be arriving this week, as well as an extra 16 gigs of ram to add to the 16 already in it.
So when all is said and done, what should be my celebration game after six months of being limited to an ex-chromebook with 4 gigs of ram?
- EU4
- HOI4
- KSP
- XCOM 2 (war of the chosen)
- Rimworld
- Civ VI
- Uboat
Those are the ones that I’ve been missing the most these last six months. Which game, say you?
as well as an extra 16 gigs of ram to add to the 16 already in it.
Well look at Mr. Moneybags over here.
XCOM2 or visuals-modded KSP
4x games are fun but don’t have the graphical punch.
Wildcard suggestion: Subnautica 2 - very pretty, a great ‘vibes’ games
Nope. Not money bags. I purposefully chose a used computer that was good enough to be better than my old desktop, but still running DDR4 so I could have a chance at finding some inexpensive RAM. Powerful enough for what I need it for, but not the newest or shiniest.
Ya, I’m still on DDR4 as well. Decided to hold off on upgrading to AM5, so I got a 5800X3D and 64GB DDR4 when it was looking like RAM was about to explode in cost.
Baldurs Gate 3
On my list but maaaan, triple A games are so bloody expensive now!
If you aren’t doing multiplayer then there is another way. Quite cheap in fact.
That’s a young man’s game. I did it back in my day. In fact it was introduction to Paradox Games with Crusader Kings 2. Eventually you get tired of all the futzing around making shit work properly and just decide to wait for a good sale.
I don’t know some of those acronyms and it would take me longer to search that it would have taken for you to type the full name, so I guess I’ll just suggest some games that I enjoyed in the last year with similar specs on my gaming PC:
- Control
- Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order
- Yakuza 0
- Nier:Automata
- Ace Combat 7: Skies Unknown
Ace Combat 7 is on my XBox wishlist. I’ll pick it up some day.
- EU4 = Europa Universalis 4
- HOI4 = Hearts of Iron 4
- KSP = Kerbal Space Program
First off congrats on your build!! That’s gonna feel great after dealing with a chromebook.
For games you’ve got great choices in there but I’m gonna vote XCOM 2. I’ve had a weird hankering for missing 99% hit rate shots at point blank myself lately.
I’ve been playing Phoenix Point recently, and while a lot of the game feels a little half baked in comparison with XCOM2, I have found that I really really like their trajectory based shots. Gone are the days of missing a 60% shot on a guy in no cover or missing a 90% shot with the barrel of your gun touching the ayy’s forehead. If they’re in the aiming circle they’re getting shot. On the other hand, getting them inside the circle is a bit more of a project, because shots will hit intervening cover. So you might only have half of an arm and some fingies visible past cover on your target, but if your guy has good aim you can still hit it.
Anyway, good game, I recommend it on sale if you’re an XCOM fan, I bought it at full listing price but I feel it’s probably not really worth that. It’s Julian Gollop (main creator of classic XCOM)'s response to the new-Xcom we got from Firaxis.
Old PC crapped the bed literally days after defeating the final Chosen on my way to the third act of the game. Hope my cloud save survived.
Expedition 33 would be my vote but you seem more strategy wargame oriented so more in that vein I really enjoyed Marvel Midnight Suns and Wildermyth.
Right now im playing The Talos Principle gold edition and im enjoying it. I reccomend it and it runs out of the box on linux. (no problems on my opensuse tumblewed gaming rig). the game i played bedore was resident evil 2 remake, ad i enjoyed it a lot.
If you have never played the Stanley parable, you should play the Stanley parable.
Played it and loved it. Didn’t find that it had a lot of replayability after the first two or three times through trying different things just to see what happened.
Chess I think.
I’m so bad at Chess that even the Dr. Wolf Chess tutor app eventually gave up, patted me on the head, and used very small words to recommend I download a checkers app instead…
I’m saying cyberpunk 2077
Bought on my XBox.
Definitely Rimworld, it will tax the hell out of that 3060 /s
In all seriousness though, congrats, and those are all great games and I love all of them, you seem to have similar interests to me. I can’t really recommend any particular one over another. That said, when I get a new computer my first choice for a new game is typically something that is a fun, lighthearted, colourful visual feast that I can immerse myself in. In the past for me that has been something like Subnautica, ARK Survival Evolved, but of course this changes over time. Given that Subnautica 2 Early Access just released and I’ve already worked my way through it, I would consider recommending that. Or if you’re not into Early Access in general or Subnautica in particular, perhaps something like Satisfactory might also properly start to show off your new hardware. Star Rupture is another interesting option. If you don’t really want to get into first person stuff and stick to the grand strategy side, Stellaris is another fun one although a lot of the DLC is pretty crap lately. And I’m always a sucker for Age of Wonders series, with 4 being the most recent entry.
I always forget that Stellaris is sitting in my steam library as well. It’s like the forgotten stepchild of Paradox. It’s also the one that I have the least amount of DLC for since (even though I’m a sci-fi nerd), I’m a history nerd even moreso.
Yeah I have a love/hate relationship with Paradox sometimes. I love their games until I hate them, then I love them again. The DLC and their pricing is always a challenge. It’s confusing.
I refuse to do the subscription. I play what I’ve got, and if there’s a massive sale, maybe I’ll pick up one or two down the road. But paradox subscriptions just feel icky to me for some reason. I’m old, I even still buy albums instead of streaming.
Out of that list XCOM or HOI4. If I may add a suggestion, the original Subnautica is on sale for $7.49USD right now. One of the best video games I’ve ever played. I’m not a horror fan but the game was so good I could deal with it. Eventually you get used to the horror aspect and it gets easier to play. For me there was a flip where everything went from super scary to this is my home. Then you’re running by the scary elements making jokes and cussing them out like friendly neighborhood rival. That was just the story portion of the game. I didn’t fully explore the creative side of it. Still the fastest and best 75 hours I’ve ever spent on a video game.
It seems Foxhole is missing from your list.
Hadn’t heard of it. Looked it up. MMO’s just aren’t my bag. Looks great for people who are into that though.
If you’re into HOI4, I hear it’s very similar to the strategy in Foxhole. As someone that’s played MMOs of all kinds, it’s unlike most. You are a cog in the war machine and you are there to make the best contribution you can. Being in a clan/regiment is purely optional.
Just know that if you choose Warden, you’re a filthy baby eater.
